AC: Shadows Deep Dive: Battle to Intensify in Condensed Campaign

Assassin's Creed Valhalla's extensive playtime prompted Ubisoft to refine the experience for its upcoming installment, Assassin's Creed: Shadows. Player feedback regarding the length of the main storyline and the sheer volume of optional tasks has been addressed directly.

Game director Charles Benoit stated that completing the main storyline of Shadows will take approximately 50 hours. A full playthrough, including exploration of all regions and side quests, is estimated at 100 hours. This contrasts with Valhalla's minimum 60-hour main story and a potential 150-hour completion time, highlighting Ubisoft's efforts to streamline the experience.

The focus on reducing optional content aims to provide a more balanced gameplay experience, preventing player burnout while retaining world richness and narrative depth. Ubisoft intends to cater to both players who prefer extensive gameplay and those who prioritize the main story, avoiding the need for hundreds of hours of playtime for completion.

Game director Jonathan Dumont highlighted the impact of the team's research trip to Japan on the game's development. The scale and detail of Japanese castles, mountainous landscapes, and dense forests significantly influenced the design, leading to a greater emphasis on realism and detail.

A key change involves world geography. Travel times between points of interest have increased, reflecting the vastness of the setting. However, this increased travel time is offset by a corresponding increase in the detail and nuance of each location. This contrasts sharply with Odyssey's more densely packed points of interest. The developers aim for a more natural and open world, with richer, more detailed locations rewarding exploration. Dumont emphasizes the significantly higher level of detail in Shadows, promising a deeply immersive Japanese atmosphere.
